Vault Books is pleased to announce it will be publishing the Limited Edition three-volume set of Larry Correia’s Grimnoir Chronicles. The three novels—Hard Magic, Spellbound, and Warbound—are our favorite works by Correia. With their mixture of action, intrigue, phenomenal characters, and painstaking attention to historical detail, the Grimnoir Chronicles are adored by fans and by us here at Vault Books.

Can we share a story with all of you? Back when the French editions of the Grimnoir Chronicles were being released, we noticed—as did many fans of the series—how incredible the cover art was. Not to take away from the US art, but the French editions were breathtaking. We learned that the supremely talented Vincent Chong was the artist. When we agreed to do the limited editions of the novels, well…we just couldn’t resist.
We contacted Vincent Chong. Those amazing French covers will be in your hands. Just like we all wanted.
Oh, and Chong is doing full-color interior art for the novels too.
Here’s a run-down of the editions of the novels:
The Grimnoir Chronicles will be published in three separate volumes; Hard Magic, Spellbound, and Warbound. Each of the novels will have the following in common:
  • A new Author’s Foreword
  • An in-depth interview with author, Larry Correia
  • Cover by Vincent Chong
  • Three full-color, interior illustrations by Vincent Chong, per novel
  • Printed on 60# acid-free paper
  • Unique foil stamped design on front board and spine
  • Leatherbound
  • Smyth sewn binding for durability
  • Each novel will contain one of the three short stories set in the Grimnoir universe, making this definitive three-book set. These short-stories are the following:
    • Detroit Christmas
    • Tokyo Raider
    • Murder on the Orient Elite
Limited Numbered Edition
  • Personally signed, and hand-numbered
  • Each novel in the series will be limited to 474 copies
  • Retail Prices:
    • Hard Magic - $80
    • Spellbound - $80
    • Warbound - $80

Limited Lettered Edition
  • Personally signed, and hand-lettered
  • Each novel in the series will be limited to 26 copies
  • Each novel will be housed in a custom, high-end tray-case
  • Each novel will contain a 4th, exclusive, full-color piece of art from Vincent Chong
  • Retail Prices:
    • Hard Magic - $250
    • Spellbound - $250
    • Warbound - $250
Bundles!
Perhaps you’d like a matching set? All numbers or letters the same? Normally we do our best to make your set match, but with a trilogy—and with this being a limited run—we understand you want things guaranteed. If you buy all three books at once, not only will you lock-in a matching set, but we’ll give you a discount for your advance support. The bundles are as follows:
  • Grimnoir Chronicles Numbered Matching Set - $225
  • Grimnoir Chronicles Lettered Matching Set - $695

Release Schedule
We will do our best to release these novels as soon as possible, but they will not be release all at once. Hard Magic will be released in 2018, with each subsequent volume coming every 6 months after.

A question about the pre-orders for the Grimnoir Trilogy. I know some places want the money up front and some take the money as pre-orders are released. How do you guys work? You take all the money now or when the books come out?

If we preorder the trilogy, but have a change of address during the run, can we change where the books are delivered?

Two questions:
1 Does the $225 for the numbered set include shipping?, and
2 Will you ship each as/when printed, or ship all three only after the third title is in print?

Hi,

No, that does not include shipping. And typically we'll ship them together. If you'd rather have us do it another way, you can note that when you order.

Thanks

Best way to know shipping to your country is to start the order process, and see what it calculates. You can do that without completing the order.

Noticed some queries about the status of these special editions here. Had the same questions myself, until I read this recent posting by the author on his Monster Hunter Nation website. His words, not mine: "The Grimnoir special limited edition leather bounds are coming along. I just need to provide an intro and interview for Spellbound and Warbound. They’ve been waiting for me. So that delay is my fault, don’t get grumpy at Vault."

So there you go. Patience. "[D]on't get grumpy at Vault."

Thank you for sharing this news. I suppose we can only guess that the rest of this trilogy will hit the presses proportionately later than the approximately one year delay of Hard Magic's run. I'm in this for the long haul, but having to guess in lieu of hard dates is unfortunate.

Just read the article again. They ret-conned it by changing dates and made no mention of the change. The change should have been been added as an update or at least an addendum.

Hard Magic was originally supposed to have been released in the spring of 2017. Just to keep the record straight here :-/

My first installment of bundled Grimnoir trilogy arrived 7/26. It's beautiful [deep breath, wipes eyes]. A long wait, but a feat of illustrated art, quality materials, and professional layout. Hoping to see Book 2 of my bundle purchase by Dec. '19?

Wait, even after all this time we're still only getting the first book? Not the entire trilogy? I know the original plan was to window the release of each book, but after such a long delay I had kind of hoped that plan had been thrown out.

Chris Yates

I made the same assumption when the shipping notice arrived. Wasn't until the one-book-box appeared on my doorstep that reality set in. I'm going to take a "glass half full" approach...or "glass a third full," and take pleasure in having Hard Magic in hand. I'm going to guess that printer issues notwithstanding, the author still needs to write new intros to #2 and #3, and THAT prevented a one-and-done shipping of the trilogy. As it is, it will be quite a trick to synchronize the numbering of each book for an installment release of a bundle order.

After the last time I asked on his blog, Correia made it clear he wasn't interested in answering any further inquiries about this whole situation.

To put things in perspective:
Correia is writing a book with Steve Diamond, the guy behind this fiasco. Once I found that out, I gave up hope of ever getting all 3 of these books.

I just keep commenting every couple of months so no new people get cheated thinking that we all have gotten our books.

I appreciate your posts/insight. I have no other source of information. I am waiting 5 years and counting for an entirely different small press to churn out my prepaid book, so "delay" is bearable. "Delay", without comment, or refusal to comment, not so much. When either this comnent board, or the site itself comes down, I'll truly kiss my prepay...and two books, goodbye.

Another update from Larry: https://monsterhunternation.com/2021/06/08/june-update-post-2 and check the comments for info from Steve.

I have to say, I'm a tad disappointed in the book itself. When I think of a leather-bound edition, I think of Easton Press or Castalia Library with raised hubs on the spine and thick leather covers.

This is a normal hardback book with leather instead of cloth or other material as the wrapper with a dust cover. The nice cover art is on the dust cover and there is a stamped illustration on the leather that you can't normally see because of the nice dust cover art.

So it's nice but not *as* nice as I thought it would be.

That said, I'm still looking forward to getting the next two volumes before the Biden administration ends.

I used the "contact" link to ask Steve if this company still exists and got this back (posted with permission):

"We do. COVID nearly ended us. We are currently in queue for the files for Spellbound to be reviewed by the printer. There is a massive paper shortage right now, which is why we are still waiting in line. We are quickly approaching our time though - thankfully, after our initial choices for printers when out of business due to the pandemic, I found a printer who can match the materials of the first book."

Take it as you will; I'll be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when I get a tracking number. :-)

Thank you for sharing that information. As you aptly observed, “it’s queued up” is not entirely proof of quantifiable progress, much less a promise to ship. My money is spent, I’m not getting it back, so I’m going to at least stay tuned and hope. No choice, really.

For those still following along, an update from here: https://monsterhunternation.com/2022/09/14/september-update-post-3/

"Grimnoir leather bound. After a couple years of nut kicks and people going out of business, Spellbound is up shortly at the new printers. I should hopefully have some really happy announcements on that within 6 weeks or so."

As I've said before I'll believe it when I get a tracking number.

It's odd; the "hated by SJWs" leader of the Rabid Puppies has been shipping really nice leather books all through the pandemic, albeit with a big delay at one point. And he even tried to keep people informed about why things were stalled.

Here's the link: https://monsterhunternation.com/2023/06/08/june-update-post-3/ and here's what he said:

"After getting repeatedly kicked in the nuts by Covid and various economic meltdowns and supply chain issues, the leatherbound Grimnoir books project is almost done! <i>I got news from the printer just last week that they are reviewing the print file. Apparently some guy named Brandon Sanderson had them a little occupied printing over half-a-million books. Strange.

The print file was pretty clean, so unless they see an issue, they’ll be printing that shortly. The file for the foil stamping is already in.

Things look pretty good. I don’t know what their lead time is. But if I get them before Christmas, I’ll be shipping them out ASAP to try and get them to you all to put under the tree.</i>

Larry just did a book update and it included this:

"Speaking of special editions, the leatherbound Warbound is about done I believe. And should be shipping pretty soon. This project has hit so many snags it has been painful so it will be great to finally have it done."

He also said, "There is also going to be a new 15th anniversary edition of MHI complete with a really nifty special fancy leather edition. I’m going through and doing another edit pass to incorporate all the little things that I wish I’d known way back when I started." but with no information about who will be publishing it.

Thanks for the update David. Of course, that was pretty much said back in December too, so I'm not holding my breath :-(

And I'm done with Larry advertising special editions of his books. This one has been a disaster and while not his fault, I'm burned beyond recognition...

Anyone gotten book 3 or even a tracking number yet?

So John over on MonsterHunterNation says he's gotten book 3 in the mail and that his shipping notice came on July 27th.

When do I get my copy!?!?

If you have not gotten any tracking confirmation, send an email with your name and current address. Hopefully that will get steve's attention.

I sent Steve email at that address and got this back so there's hope! Of course, I don't have a tracking number yet...

"The numbered is the “regular” version, and it’s shipping right now. I’m doing the next batch this weekend!"

I got another message back from Steve saying he packed mine up over the weekend and, sure enough, I got a tracking number!

The end is in sight...

I sent an email, got the tracking number and just checked this morning. It has arrived at the post office, so now I KNOW it's in the system.

Congrats.
And no offense, but I hope I never see you again! :-D

Mine came in the mail. I'm deleting the bookmark to this site and will never trust another "special edition" recommendation from Larry Correia again.

7 1/2 years of no updates, hounding the author, the publisher, anyone willing to listen. All we wanted were updates and we had to fight for them every step of the way. This was the worst experience I've ever had for buying a book. Thanks to all you other buyers who jumped in and helped drag the updates out of the blackhole.

Adios and goodbye...

Congrats and enjoy the books!

I have to agree; I am rather disappointed with Larry; he had the inside track with Steve but never seemed to drive the process so we waited *years* for what is, in the end, a rather mediocre book set.

I'm happy to close the tab I've kept open all these years but I suspect I'll run into you again somewhere down the line!

I got the third book! What a long strange trip it has been. Now if I can only remember where I put the first two.
